Frequently Asked Questions

How much does 1 gallon of paint cover?

One gallon of paint generally covers about 350 square feet, though this can vary based on type of paint and application method (brush, roller, sprayer).

Do I need to prime over existing paint on walls?

Most of the time, you don’t need to prime over existing paint on walls. If the existing color is dark and you’re covering it with a lighter shade, you can use a primer if you’d like, but often it’s just as effective to apply an extra coat of your new paint color.

We recommend a light sanding as it provides a slightly rougher surface for the new paint to bond to. Also, it’s best to wash the walls to remove any dirt, dust, grease, or oils or else the paint might not stick properly. Just make sure they’re dry before you start painting.

Can we match colours from paint companies other than cloverdale?

Yes, we can match colors from other brands. We have access to a large database of color formulas that covers popular shades from many paint companies. If the color isn’t already in our system, we can still create a close match by using a physical sample, such as a paint chip or a small painted surface.

How many coats of paint do I need to put on?
For most colors, two coats are recommended. However, certain vibrant colors may need more to be fully opaque. If you’re covering a very dark color with a light one, a third coat or a primer may also be helpful.
How long do I have to wait between coats of paint?

For water-based paints, the typical wait time between coats is 3-4 hours. This can vary slightly depending on factors like humidity, temperature, and ventilation, which affect drying time.

Humidity:
Ideal humidity levels for painting are typically around 40-50%. High humidity means there’s more moisture in the air, which slows down the evaporation of water in paint. When humidity is high, paint takes longer to dry, and there’s also a risk of it drying unevenly or developing a tacky feel.

Temperature
The ideal temperature for painting is around 21°C, but you can generally paint within a range of 10°C to 29°C. Cooler temperatures slow down drying time, while warmer temperatures can speed it up.

Ventilation
Proper airflow helps carry away the moisture or solvents from the paint, allowing it to dry faster. Good ventilation is essential, especially when working in enclosed areas, as it not only speeds up drying but also helps remove fumes.

Is all our paint water based?

No, while most of our paints are water-based due to their ease of use and low VOC (volatile organic compound) levels, we also offer oil-based paints. Oil-based paints are ideal for industrial applications and certain surfaces that require extra durability and a high-gloss finish. We’re happy to help you choose the best type of paint for your specific project needs.
